21 & Over | Husky Climbing Rock — The night pep rally below the stadium

The university's filming notice for 21 and Over is unusually specific about one night: on 21 and 22 September 2011 the crew would shoot a pep rally scene after dark, near the climbing rock south of Husky Stadium.

The rock is not a rock. It is five walls of concrete and embedded stone, built in the spring of 1976 to a design by the architects Anderson and Bell, standing on a bed of gravel meant to catch anyone who falls off. Generations of Seattle climbers learned their first moves here before indoor gyms existed. It is free, unsupervised and open at all hours, which is why it works as a night location: no ticket booth, no gate, no closing time.

Behind it the stadium holds seventy thousand people on autumn Saturdays. In front, across the road, the boathouse sits on Union Bay and the parking lot fills with boats on game days. Between the two, this small huddle of grey walls has been quietly used for half a century by people the stadium was never built for.

Come at dusk. The floodlights over the lot throw hard shadows across the rock's face, and the whole set-up looks staged even when nobody is filming. Put a hand on the concrete and you can feel where forty years of chalk and shoe rubber have polished the holds smooth.
