第9話、莉香は飯田橋のCANAL CAFEで母と向き合う。水辺のテーブルは開放的なのに、会話は落ち着かない。世界を飛び回る母と、地図を愛しながら人との距離を慎重に測る娘。結婚の噂をきっかけに並んで座っても、同じ景色を同じ速さで見ることはできない。そのずれが、水の入ったグラスや外濠の波のように静かに広がる。
店は線路と外濠の間に細長く伸び、電車の音が会話へ周期的に割り込む。入店するなら営業の邪魔にならない席で、作品の構図より水面の動きを見てほしい。莉香は母のようになれないことを恥じる必要も、母を完全に理解する必要もない。電車が橋を渡り終え、テーブルに静けさが戻る数秒間に、親子の距離は消すものではなく測り直すものだとわかる。
