Biography | Mukesh Ambani — The Patalganga Plant He Left Stanford to Finish

In 1980 Dhirubhai Ambani pulled his eldest son out of a Stanford MBA and sent him to a village industrial estate east of Mumbai.

CNN dates the withdrawal to 1980. Britannica says 1981. Both agree on the reason: Reliance needed someone who could read a process diagram to put up a polyester filament yarn plant at Patalganga, in the MIDC belt at Rasayani in Raigad.

Mukesh was twenty-two or twenty-three, a chemical engineer with almost no site experience. Hamish McDonald's account of the period, later reused across Indian business histories, puts him in charge of construction and of debugging the lines.

The plant used DuPont technology bought outright rather than through a joint venture. McDonald records a remark by DuPont's then international director, Richard Chinman, that the same job would have taken twenty-six months in a developed country. Reliance finished it in eighteen and had the lines in regular production in November 1982.

That date is the moment. Before Patalganga, Mukesh was the founder's son on the board — Reliance had put him there in 1977, at twenty, a fact the company still prints on its chairman page. After Patalganga he was the man who could deliver a plant.

The estate is still there: B-1 to B-5 and A3, MIDC Industrial Area, P.O. Rasayani, Patalganga. The product slate grew from PFY into PTA, LAB and staple fibre. The original yarn hall is no longer the story. The decision to leave Palo Alto for this plot is.

A visitor will find a working chemical complex, not a museum. The turning point is the job, not a preserved control room.
