Abduction | The Cork Factory — a Strip District warehouse that learned to be an address

Railroad Street runs behind the produce terminals in the Strip District, and the Cork Factory stands over it in dark brick: two 1901 buildings of the Armstrong Cork Company, where workers once cut bottle stoppers and insulation board by the trainload. Abduction shot here, and the building gives the film something Pittsburgh has in surplus — industrial bones repurposed into somewhere a person with money and secrets might live.

The conversion happened in 2007, four years before the film. Two hundred and ninety-seven loft apartments went into the shells, and the developers left the evidence in place: mushroom-capped concrete columns, mill windows nine feet tall, freight doors that open onto nothing. From the street the ground floor now reads as apartments and a restaurant while the upper floors still read as a factory. That double exposure is the whole appeal on camera.

You cannot wander the residential floors, and you do not need to. The exterior is the point, best seen from the corner of Railroad and 24th where the two blocks step down toward the Allegheny.

Come on a Saturday morning and combine it with the Strip: Polish sausage, Italian groceries, the fish market, vendors selling Terrible Towels on folding tables. Six blocks of the city refusing to become a museum, with the cork works watching from the end of the row.
