Abduction | Chatham University — a wooded campus doing the work of a whole institution

Woodland Road climbs away from Fifth Avenue in Shadyside and within two hundred yards the city is gone. Chatham University sits on thirty-nine wooded acres of former Gilded Age estates, and Abduction borrowed it for the film's college and institutional scenes — the calm, credentialed world Nathan's life is measured against.

The campus reads on camera because it was never designed as a campus. Steel and glass money built these houses at the end of the nineteenth century, and the school simply moved in: Mellon Hall, a Tudor pile with carved oak and leaded glass; Lindsay House; Rea House; a landscape shaped by the Olmsted firm's principle that buildings should sit inside trees rather than in front of lawns. The result is an institution that looks slightly like a private residence pretending to be a school, which is convenient for a thriller about a boy discovering his home is not what it claims.

Rachel Carson graduated here in 1929, when it was Pennsylvania College for Women, and wrote for the student magazine before she wrote Silent Spring. The arboretum around you is not incidental to that.

Walk up from the Fifth Avenue gate on a weekday in autumn. The grounds are open, the noise drops away by the second bend, and the trees do most of the talking.
