Abduction | Allegheny Cemetery — three hundred acres of quiet inside a working city

Lawrenceville hums with bars and coffee shops until you pass through the gate on Butler Street, and then it stops. Allegheny Cemetery is three hundred acres of hills, ponds and old oaks laid out in 1844, one of the earliest rural garden cemeteries in America, and Abduction uses it for exactly what it is: the one place in the film where nobody is running.

Rural cemeteries were built to be visited by the living. Pittsburgh had no public park when this one opened, so families came here on Sundays to walk the carriage roads. That intent survives. The gates are open every day, the roads are paved and quiet, and you are meant to wander.

Stephen Foster is buried here, and Josh Gibson, and Lillian Russell, and roughly a hundred and thirty thousand others, including Civil War dead moved in from the Allegheny Arsenal explosion a mile downriver. The monuments are the draw — Gothic mausoleums cut into the hillsides, obelisks, and marble angels that have been softening in Pittsburgh's air for a century and a half.

Take the Butler Street entrance and climb. Halfway up, the mill-town valley opens below you through the trees, church spires and row houses and the river beyond. The film needed a place where grief could sit still. It found the right one.
