Abduction | Pittsburgh International Airport — the terminal built for a hub that left
kevin
Airports in thrillers are pressure chambers, and Abduction uses this one that way. The real building has a stranger story than the scene it hosts.
Pittsburgh International opened its X-shaped terminal in 1992 as US Airways' great hub, sized for a carrier that would carry twenty million passengers a year through it. The carrier collapsed its hub in the early 2000s. What remained was one of the roomiest airports in America running at a third of its design load: long empty sightlines, gates with nobody at them, a shopping mall of a landside building that once genuinely competed with regional malls. Film crews noticed. It is easier to shoot in an airport that has space to spare.
The oddity worth seeing is in the Airside Terminal core, past security. Alexander Calder's mobile Pittsburgh, built for the 1958 Allegheny County airport and stored for decades, hangs there in the atrium alongside statues of George Washington and Franco Harris — the latter frozen mid-catch from the Immaculate Reception, which is Pittsburgh in one gesture.
A new landside terminal opened in 2025, so the approach the film shot has changed. The Calder still turns overhead, the Harris statue still leans, and the walk between them is still longer than it needs to be.
