Biography | Ken Murphy — The Quadrangle Where Cork Gave Him a Commerce Degree in 1988

People meet Ken Murphy as the Irishman who walked into Tesco in the middle of a pandemic.

The first public building that put a qualification in his pocket is older than the supermarket chain he now runs.

University College Cork opened in 1849 as Queen's College, Cork, on a rise above the River Lee.

Sir Thomas Deane and Benjamin Woodward designed the Tudor Gothic quadrangle that still faces the visitor first.

Murphy took a Bachelor of Commerce here and finished in 1988.

The Irish Examiner and later profiles all put the degree on this campus, not on a later finishing school.

What the internet sometimes adds next is an MBA from Harvard.

That is the wrong course.

He later sat the Advanced Management Programme, a short residential course for people already in post, not a two-year master's.

After Cork he trained as an accountant at Coopers & Lybrand, the firm that is now part of PwC.

Procter & Gamble came next.

By twenty-two he was already a finance director at Alliance UniChem, the drugs wholesaler that would fold into Boots.

The quadrangle does not advertise any of that.

It is a limestone court with a clock tower, built for a college that was supposed to civilise Munster and ended up exporting retail operators.

Stand in the quad and the story is ordinary in the best way.

A commerce graduate from a regional university learned to read a ledger, then spent thirty years inside chemists' warehouses and beauty counters before anyone in British grocery knew his name.

The conferring year is 1988.

The month of the ceremony is not on the public record, so the pin carries the year and not a false day.
