Biography | Ken Murphy — D90 at Beeston, Where a Wholesaler's Accountant Learned to Run Boots

The building that made Murphy a retailer rather than a bookkeeper sits on Thane Road in Beeston, not in a London tower.

Boots D90 West is the 1960s headquarters block at the old factory site.

Skidmore, Owings and Merrill designed it with Yorke Rosenberg Mardall.

Historic England listed the block Grade II* in 1996.

Murphy arrived in this world through Alliance UniChem, the drugs wholesaler he joined as finance director when he was twenty-two.

UniChem merged toward Boots.

In 2006 Stefano Pessina's group combined with the chemist chain, and Murphy worked the integration.

By 2011 he was joint chief operating officer for Boots in the UK and Ireland.

In 2013 he became managing director of health and beauty, international and brands.

After Walgreens took over Boots in 2014 he rose to chief commercial officer and president of global brands at Walgreens Boots Alliance.

The public record of those titles is consistent across Tesco's own succession announcement of 2 October 2019, The Guardian, and The Grocer.

D90 is where a Cork accountant learned the difference between moving boxes of pills and running a high-street brand.

The factory buildings next door, D10 and D6, are Grade I daylight plants by Owen Williams.
