Biography | Ken Murphy — Baker Library, and the Short Course the Profiles Keep Calling an MBA

Type Murphy's education into a search box and Harvard appears twice.

Once as fact.

Once as a course he did not take.

He completed the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School, a residential course built for people already running something.

Wikipedia, Tesco-era profiles, and the Irish Examiner all attach Harvard to his name.

Several secondary pages then upgrade the course to an MBA.

That is a different degree, two years long, aimed at a different stage of a career.

The AMP began in 1943 as a wartime production course.

By the time Murphy sat it, it was a matter of weeks on the Allston campus across the Charles from Harvard Yard.

Baker Library is the pile that faces that campus: brick, colonnade, the school's public face.

The pin is the library, not a classroom whose number nobody published.

The year is the soft point.

One compiled profile puts the AMP in 2000.

The better newspaper accounts say only that he later attended Harvard, without a date.

So this memory carries no invented year.

It carries the institution and the correction.

A living executive's education is easy to inflate because the letters look the same on a conference badge.

The honest version is smaller and more useful.

Cork taught him commerce.

Coopers & Lybrand taught him to sign an audit file.

Alliance UniChem and Boots taught him to move product.

Harvard, for a few weeks, put him in a room with other people who already had P&Ls.

That is the whole claim.
