Biography|Joyce Msuya — The Royal College Building That Issued Her Glasgow Degree

The University of Strathclyde still teaches from the former Royal College of Science and Technology at 204 George Street.

The listed Italianate block is the public face of the John Anderson campus.

Msuya arrived from Tanzania in 1989.

The university's own alumni office records a BSc in Biochemistry and Immunology in 1992.

That is the date on this pin.

Glasgow in those years was not a quiet laboratory town.

Strathclyde later said the course had pulled a young African woman straight from home and changed how she saw the world, when it named her Alumna of the Year in 2019.

The award itself was given at a graduation ceremony on 21 June 2019.

This memory is the degree, not the prize.

After Glasgow she crossed to the University of Ottawa and finished an MSc in Microbiology and Immunology in 1996, working on cytomegalovirus in the shadow of the African HIV epidemic.

She did not stay for the PhD Ottawa offered.

The Citizen records that she left the bench for public health.

The Royal College facade on George Street is the building a visitor can still stand in front of.

The laboratories she used have been refitted many times.

The credential is what travelled: a Glasgow science degree in the pocket of a Tanzanian microbiologist who next appears in World Bank directories.
