Biography|Carol Tome — The Glenlake Headquarters Where UPS Named Its First Outsider CEO

On 12 March 2020 the UPS board named Carol Tomé chief executive, effective 1 June.

The Form 8-K filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission the next day is the primary record. David Abney would retire as CEO on that June date.

She had sat on the UPS board since 2003 and had chaired its audit committee. She was the first person hired into the top job from outside the company in a history that begins in 1907, and the twelfth chief executive in that line.

The principal place of employment named in the offer letter attached to the filing is the corporate headquarters at 55 Glenlake Parkway, Atlanta — a Perimeter office campus that sits in Sandy Springs even when the letterhead says Atlanta.

The building is an ordinary corporate headquarters, not a public museum. The pin marks the campus the filing names, not an office number.

She took the job in the first months of the Covid-19 shipping surge. Company materials from the period call her the architect of a later slogan — Customer First, People Led, Innovation Driven — and keep the headcount in the mid-400,000s.

A UPS 767 freighter on the ground at Hartsfield-Jackson is what Atlanta actually sees of the network she was hired to run. The headquarters itself does not photograph as a landmark.
