Biography|Carol Tome — Born in Jackson, Under the Antler Arches of Town Square

People who meet Carol Tomé as the chief executive of UPS tend to start the story in Atlanta.
The first pin is a small mountain town at the foot of the Tetons.
She was born Carol Louise Buchenroth in Jackson, Wyoming, on 8 January 1957.
Britannica, the German biographical service Munzinger, and the LittleSis corporate directory all give that date and place.
A circulating Wikipedia paragraph once printed 10 January instead. The infobox on the same page, and the independent sources above, keep the 8th.
Jackson in 1957 was still a ranch and tourist town of a few thousand people.
Her father, Felix Buchenroth Jr., ran the Jackson State Bank. Her mother, Marion, had come from the University of Wyoming and settled in a log cabin the family later recalled as still standing near Jackson Lumber.
That cabin is a private address. This memory stays on the public square.
Town Square — dedicated in 1932 as George Washington Memorial Park — sits at Broadway and Cache, four elk-antler arches at the corners.
It is the civic center of the town where she grew up hunting, fishing, and watching a community bank from the inside.
The hospital that served Jackson then, St. John's, stood a few blocks west on Glenwood Street, on ground now occupied by St. John's Episcopal Church. The medical center moved to East Broadway around 1960.
No surviving ward plaque names her birth room. The square is what a visitor can still stand in.
The plan after graduate school was to go back into that family bank. The bank was sold instead. The path out of Jackson ran through Laramie and Denver, then Atlanta.
