Intel had never given the top job to a finance outsider.
On 31 January 2019 the board named Robert Swan chief executive and elected him a director.
He had been interim chief since 20 June 2018, the day Brian Krzanich resigned.
He had been CFO only since October 2016.
The company counted him as the seventh chief executive in its then fifty-year history.
The press release went out from Santa Clara, from the campus at 2200 Mission College Boulevard.
Todd Underwood became interim CFO the same day.
Swan held the chair until 15 February 2021, when Pat Gelsinger succeeded him.
The announcement of that hand-off came on 13 January 2021.
The finance outsider lasted two years in a job engineers had held since 1968.
