American Pie 2 | Pasadena City Hall — Spain, Eleven Miles from Downtown

When American Pie 2 needed Spain, the production drove to Pasadena and shot in a courtyard finished in 1927. The building is Pasadena City Hall, designed by the San Francisco firm Bakewell and Brown, and it is one of those American civic buildings that decided early to be European and then committed completely — a domed tower, arcaded loggias, a fountain, orange trees, arches deep enough to throw real shadow at midday.

That commitment is why it keeps getting cast. The courtyard reads as Mediterranean because it was built to read as Mediterranean, by architects who had studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and were not being ironic about it. A camera pointed at the arcade sees Seville. A camera turned a hundred and eighty degrees sees Garfield Avenue.

The courtyard is genuinely open. This is a working city hall — council meets here, people come to argue about permits — and the central garden is public space with benches, used at lunchtime by staff who have long since stopped noticing the dome. Weddings queue up on Saturdays. So do film crews.

Walk into the middle of the courtyard and look up through the arch at the tower. Then look at the floor of the arcade, which is worn in a diagonal line where ninety-nine years of people have cut the corner. Spain never had to be built here. It was, and then a comedy borrowed it for an afternoon.
