American Hustle | Millbury Street at Kelley Square — A Worcester Block Playing Brooklyn and Camden

The film opens with a boy throwing rocks through storefront windows so that his father's glass business will have work to do. That block is Millbury Street, running southwest out of Kelley Square through Worcester's Green Island. It doubled for 1950s Brooklyn in the flashbacks and for 1970s Camden when Carmine Polito works a crowd of constituents, and the reason a scout wanted it is unglamorous: nobody ever came along and modernized it.

Low brick blocks. Second-floor apartments sitting over shopfronts. Painted signage half-scrubbed by weather. A street width set before the automobile decided how wide streets should be. Kelley Square itself was a seven-way intersection notorious across New England for decades until it was rebuilt as a roundabout in 2020, and Millbury Street is one of the seven roads feeding it.

Walk down from the square in the late afternoon and the light runs low along the building faces exactly as it does in the flashbacks. Nick's Bar and Restaurant at number 124, the smoky club where Irving and Carmine bond over a drink, has since closed and changed hands. The street outlasts its tenants. That is the whole point of it.
