People treat the Associated Press as a New York wire that always had an American in the chair.

Her way in was a sales job on a canal in London.

In 2004 Daisy Veerasingham joined the Associated Press as sales director for AP Television News.

The office was The Interchange, the Grade II listed former London and North Western Railway warehouse at Oval Road, Camden Lock.

Companies House still registers Associated Press Television News Limited at The Interchange, Oval Road, London, NW1 7DZ.

AP's own contact page names the same building as its London office.

She arrived from group sales and marketing at LexisNexis, and before that from sales and marketing roles at the Financial Times.

AP's later staff profiles record a law degree and make the other point plainly: she had not worked as a journalist.

The warehouse stands over the old canal-to-rail dock off Regent's Canal, a goods shed converted to offices in the late 1980s and restored again in 2007.

From this address she later ran international video sales across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Australia.

By 2010 AP had made her senior vice president for international revenue.

The 2004 hire is the hinge in the public record: a first-generation Briton of Sri Lankan descent, raised in London, walking into the video arm of a cooperative founded in 1846.

Seventeen years later the same cooperative would name her its fourteenth leader.

The warehouse is still there, red brick over the basin, on the cobbles at the end of Oval Road.
