Roger and Anita marry under the tallest nave in London. St Luke's was finished in 1824 to James Savage's design, and it is the building that began the Gothic Revival properly in the capital — no plaster pretending to be masonry, but a genuine stone vault sixty feet overhead and flying buttresses outside carrying the load the way the medieval builders would have recognised.

Charles Dickens married Catherine Hogarth here in 1836, twelve years after it opened. The film adds a wedding whose guest list runs heavily to dogs, and it works because the room is genuinely enormous. The camera can look up and find height instead of a ceiling.

The church stands on Sydney Street just off the King's Road, set back behind a churchyard garden that most of the people shopping fifty yards away never turn into. It is an active parish church, open for services and often through the day. Go in, and stand at the back of the nave for a minute before you look at anything in particular. The scale is the entire point, and it only lands if you let the room be quiet around you first.
