Biography | Houlin Zhao — The Telematics Master's Taken in This Park

People treat the Essex year as a footnote under two Chinese campuses.

It is the year the file becomes international.

Zhao enrolled at the University of Essex in 1984 and received a Master of Science in telematics in 1985.

Telematics, in that decade's British usage, meant data and telecommunication systems rather than later in-car gadgets.

The Colchester campus sits in Wivenhoe Park, two miles from the town centre.

It is a plate-glass university opened by royal charter in 1965, with computer science and electronic engineering already on the site.

An official ITU curriculum vitae also records a Chinese visiting-scholar stay in Switzerland in 1979-1980, before Essex.

The master's is the foreign degree the Union itself prints on every short biography.

He went back to the ministry design institute with a science prize dated the same year, then left China for Geneva in 1986.

Essex is the hinge.

Without the telematics year there is still a standards engineer in the ministry system.

With it there is a staff member who can work in English and French inside the old CCITT secretariat.

Wivenhoe Park is public parkland.

John Constable painted it in 1816; the university towers rose in the 1960s on the same ground.

Nothing here is a private address or a current workplace routine.

The school of computer science and electronic engineering still occupies this campus.

The MSc title has shifted in the prospectus; the 1985 diploma name remains telematics.
