You're Beautiful|Myeongdong Cathedral — The Hill Where Gemma Almost Took Vows

The first time the camera finds Go Mi-nyeo, she is not an idol. She is a postulant on a brick hill above the Myeongdong shops, saying the words that still hang in this nave: in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Myeongdong Cathedral sits at 74 Myeongdong-gil in Jung-gu. The Gothic Revival brickwork was finished in 1898. The official name is the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. Visitors still climb the same slope Park Shin-hye walked in episode 1 of You're Beautiful, when Mi-nyeo — Gemma to the sisters — is deciding whether the habit is her life. The drama needs her to leave. The building does not. It keeps the same pointed arches and the same grey stone steps that Seoul used as a Catholic refuge long before any boy band moved in.

Stand under the west front and the shopping streets drop away. Tour groups photograph the facade. Mass times are posted on the door. Inside, the light is cooler than the neon below. That contrast is the whole first episode: a girl trained for silence being pulled toward noise.

Sixteen years later the cathedral is still a working church, Historic Site 258, and the one publicly visitable room where the nun story of You're Beautiful actually begins. Leave by the side path and the city noise returns in one flight of stairs.
