People treat TotalEnergies chiefs as products of La Défense glass.

Patrick Jean Pouyanné was born on 24 June 1963 in Le Petit-Quevilly, a Seine-Maritime commune on the left bank opposite Rouen.

Paris-Normandie later pointed out the local coincidence: the boy arrived a few kilometres from the old Shell works at Petit-Couronne.

He was not born into oil.

His father worked as a regional customs director.

His mother worked for the French postal service.

The Financial Times later described that household as a civil-service one that moved with postings.

Early schooling was in Forbach in Moselle.

Later years were spent around Bayonne and Saint-Jean-de-Luz in the Basque country, where the customs posting took the family.

The house of his birth is a private address and is not pinned here.

The civic building that still stands for the commune is the Hôtel de Ville on Place Henri-Barbusse, finished in 1846.

That is the public pin.

The 1963 register belongs to this town, not to Courbevoie.

From here the path ran through classes préparatoires in Bordeaux and the Palaiseau plateau of École Polytechnique, then into the Corps des Mines and the French industry ministry.

Only in January 1997 did he join Elf in Angola.

The Normandy start is easy to skip on a corporate timeline.

It is the fact that explains the rest: a moving fonctionnaire household, not a petroleum dynasty.

Stand on Place Henri-Barbusse and the scale is ordinary — a mid-nineteenth-century mairie, a working suburb in a Seine meander.

That is the right first frame for a life later measured in barrels and towers.
