Winter Sonata | Chuncheon Myeongdong Street — The New Year They Missed

The trees in the middle of the street are the giveaway. Chuncheon Myeongdong is a short commercial cut of Jungang-ro, named after Seoul's larger original, with shops, a rotary, and a line of planted evergreens down the axis. VisitKorea still lists it as a Winter Sonata location. A small sculpture now marks the fact so the street does not have to explain itself.

On screen, Joon-sang and Yoo-jin promise to meet here on New Year's Eve. She waits in the cold. He is in a wreck on the way in. Ten years later they stand on the same pavement and the city has kept the name. The drama needed a downtown that looked like a date and felt like a miss. Chuncheon's Myeongdong is still that size: enough neon to count as a night out, short enough that you see the person you came for, or the empty space they left.

Stand under the trees after dark. Dakgalbi alley is one turning away. Jungang Market sits at the next door. The provincial offices sit behind the banks. The street does not freeze the way the island does. What it holds is the appointment that did not happen, which is why the marker is here and not on the highway.
