The Amazing Spider-Man|Universal Studios Hollywood backlot — the New York you can ride a tram through

A good share of the film's Manhattan is in Universal City, on a hillside backlot forty minutes north of the real thing, and it is the one location on this list that was built to be visited.

New York Street is a few blocks of standing facades — brownstone stoops, fire escapes, cast-iron storefronts, corner delis with no interiors behind them — laid out so a camera can find a dozen different cities in the same alley. The Amazing Spider-Man shot street work here, and part of the bridge sequence was built on the lot as well, a section of deck and truss standing in for the East River span while the plates came from Brooklyn. This is how a New York movie gets made in California: real exteriors for the establishing beats, a controllable backlot for everything that involves a stunt rig, a burning car, or forty takes.

The Studio Tour tram runs through it daily, which means the facades are both a working set and a ride. You will pass the same doorways from a dozen films in three minutes.

Sit on the left side of the tram when you board. When the tram slows on New York Street, look at the brick — it is painted plaster, and once you have seen the brushwork you cannot unsee it in any of these movies again.
