For Thierry Delaporte the line was drawn here, at 27 rue Saint-Guillaume in the 7th arrondissement, the old Institut d'études politiques de Paris.

He was born in Bernay, in the Eure, on 28 May 1967.

By the early 1990s he held a Sciences Po degree in economics and finance from this building.

Who's Who in France records the same credential alongside a law master's from Paris II Panthéon-Assas.

The campus is still a compact hôtel particulier around a courtyard, training students to move between state, markets, and languages.

In July 1992 he started as an external auditor at Arthur Andersen in Paris.

Three years later he left the audit firm for Capgemini, where he would stay for a quarter century.

The order of those jobs is the useful fact.

A French finance graduate, not a software engineer by training, later ran an Indian IT company without having grown up inside one.

Stand on the pavement at number 27 and the building is still the Paris campus of Sciences Po.

A visitor can see the courtyard and the library entrance without inventing a classroom he sat in.
