The funeral is filmed in Los Angeles, on the stretch of Wilshire Boulevard where the city briefly remembers it once wanted to look like Europe.

Immanuel Presbyterian Church went up in 1929 at Wilshire and Berendo, French Gothic Revival in reinforced concrete, with a tower that climbs past two hundred feet and was for a long time among the tallest church spires in the city. Chauncey Skilling designed it during the boom that pushed the Wilshire corridor west out of downtown, and the ambition shows: pointed arches, a rose window, buttresses that are doing rather less structural work than they advertise. Inside, the nave is high, narrow and dim, and the stained glass throws colour across the pews in long bars on a bright afternoon.

That interior does the work in the film. Peter sits through the service for a man who died because of something Peter did and did not undo, and the architecture supplies the silence — a room built to make individual grief feel small and held at the same time.

It is still an active congregation, not a set, and the doors are open for worship and for the concerts it hosts in that acoustic. Slip into a back pew mid-week if the building is unlocked. The temperature drops about ten degrees the moment the Wilshire traffic noise cuts out behind you, and that drop is the scene.
