Technology History | 900 East Avenue, Rochester — The House the Developing Fee Built

At the opening of this museum on 9 November 1949, the president of Eastman Kodak cut a strip of motion picture film instead of a ribbon.

The house behind him had been built between 1902 and 1905 for George Eastman, who lived in it until 1932 and left most of his estate to the University of Rochester.

New York State chartered George Eastman House Inc. in 1947, the university handed over the mansion the following year, and the collections went on show in the rooms Eastman had used for entertaining.

By its own account and the University of Rochester's, it is the oldest museum in the world devoted to photography.

What paid for the house is worth stating plainly, because it was not the camera.

The Kodak of 1888 cost $25 and came sealed with a paper roll good for a hundred circular exposures, and the owner could not open it.

When the roll was finished you posted the whole camera back to Rochester. For $10 Kodak stripped out the film, developed and printed it, loaded a fresh roll, and returned the camera to you.

Eastman wrote the advertising himself, after the agency man he hired could not grasp how simple the thing was, and the line he produced was "You press the button, we do the rest."

Read as a business model rather than a slogan, it records that Eastman had split photography into taking and processing and kept the half that repeats.

The camera was $25 once. The developing was $10 again, and again, for as long as you kept taking pictures.

The estate runs to about 12.5 acres, the collections to several million objects, and the museum was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966.

It was renamed from George Eastman House to the George Eastman Museum in October 2015.

The mansion and gardens are open to visitors. The second image here is a period cutaway drawing of the 1888 camera's interior, not a photograph of one.

イーストマンは広告も自分で書いた。雇った広告屋がこの機械の単純さを理解できなかったからで、そこから出てきた一行が "You press the button, we do the rest." である。

標語ではなく事業の設計図として読めば、彼が写真を「撮ること」と「現像すること」に分割し、繰り返し発生するほうを手元に残した、と書いてある。

カメラは一度きりの25ドル。現像は10ドル、また10ドル、撮り続けるかぎり何度でも。

敷地は約12.5エーカー、収蔵品は数百万点にのぼる。1966年には国定歴史建造物（National Historic Landmark）に指定された。

2015年10月、名称がジョージ・イーストマン・ハウスからジョージ・イーストマン・ミュージアムに変わった。

邸宅と庭園は一般公開されている。二枚目の画像は1888年のカメラ内部を描いた当時の断面図であり、実物の写真ではない。
