Rooftop Prince|Seoul City Wall Inwangsan Section — The Ridge He Climbed Out Of Joseon

The time jump does not end on a rooftop. It continues on the stone of the old city wall.

From Wolam Neighborhood Park the Hanyangdoseong climbs toward Inwangsan and Seodaemun Independence Park. VisitKorea's Jongno circuit for Rooftop Prince puts the prince and his retainers on this grade after they leave the Songwol alleys. The wall is the same masonry that closed the capital in the Joseon century the four men came from. The view over the ridge is not. High-rises and N Seoul Tower sit where tiled roofs used to sit.

The path is public. You can walk it without a ticket. The stones are worn smooth where hands have used them as a rail. On a clear afternoon the mismatch is exact: a fortress line built to keep the city in, and a skyline that no longer answers to a palace.

Look back once you reach the fork toward Independence Park. The wall snakes the way it did when the cameras were here. The city on the other side has not stayed still.
