Rooftop Prince|Naksan Park — The Hill of Alleys After the Jump

The prince does not learn twenty-first-century Seoul on a boulevard. He learns it on a hill of stairs.

Naksan Park sits above Ihwa-dong at the eastern city wall, a short walk from Hyehwa Station. The lanes dropping off the park toward Naksan 4-gil are the kind of tight residential maze the production used for the four Joseon men stumbling through modern Seoul. Guides still list Ihwa Mural Village on Rooftop Prince itineraries for that reason. The famous carp staircase was painted over by residents in 2016. The hill and the wall path were not.

From the park you see Dongdaemun and the tower on Namsan in one turn of the head. The houses below are lived in. Keep your voice down on the stairs. The drama needed the disorientation of a slope that does not explain itself. The slope is still here. The murals come and go.

Walk the wall line at the top before you drop into the alleys. That is the view the retainers would have had if anyone had handed them a map.
