Racing|Formula 1|1957 German Grand Prix — Fangio Recovers from the Pit Stop to Secure His Fifth Title at Nürburgring

When Juan Manuel Fangio brought the number 1 Maserati 250F into the Nürburgring pits after completing lap 12 on 4 August 1957, he surrendered a 28-second lead so the crew could refuel the car and replace its rear wheels.

The planned stop took 52 seconds, and the time lost slowing, stopping, and accelerating again left Fangio more than three quarters of a minute behind the Lancia-Ferraris of Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins.

This was race six of the 1957 World Championship of Drivers, run over 22 laps of the 22.810-kilometre Nordschleife, and Fangio had started from pole after a 9-minute 25.6-second qualifying lap.

For the first three laps after rejoining, his fresh tires and heavier fuel load produced little change, but by lap 16 the deficit had fallen to 33 seconds and the contemporary Motor Sport report then recorded successive laps of 9:28.5, 9:25.3, and 9:23.4 as he closed on the two Ferraris.

At the end of lap 20, Fangio was only two seconds behind Hawthorn after setting the official fastest lap in 9:17.4, eight seconds quicker than his pole time.

He passed Collins on the inside at Nordkurve and overtook Hawthorn before the course reached Breidscheid, completing the recovery with roughly a lap and a half remaining rather than relying on a later penalty or countback.

Fangio completed all 22 laps in 3 hours 30 minutes 38.3 seconds and won by 3.6 seconds from Hawthorn, with Collins third another 32 seconds behind.

The victory secured Fangio's fifth World Drivers' Championship, and the Formula 1 archive records the season ending with Fangio on 40 points ahead of Stirling Moss on 25.

Place is essential to the story because this was the original 1927–1966 Nordschleife rather than today's Grand Prix circuit, and the accompanying diagram depicts that historical North Loop with its named sections and start-finish area rather than claiming to show the race itself.
