Biography|Michael Suffredini — The January He Walked Into Johnson Space Center as a Civil Servant

Johnson Space Center sits at 2101 NASA Parkway in Houston's Clear Lake.

Building 1, the nine-storey administration block, is the address NASA prints for the center's senior offices.

Michael Suffredini joined NASA here in January 1989.

The agency's own 2004 personnel release and the University of Texas alumni note both give that month.

He was not yet a program manager.

He had spent the years after his 1983 Austin degree at McDonnell Douglas, working the contractor side of mission operations.

The civil-service hire put him inside the shuttle and station machinery instead of beside it.

Over the next fifteen years he moved through the jobs that later made him useful as a chief: ISS operations integration, vehicle development, the payloads office, and the deputy slot in the ISS business office.

A NASA headquarters note dated 12 May 2004 says he had already been instrumental in starting on-orbit operations and in launching the station's research program.

In August 2004 he became deputy ISS program manager at this center, succeeding Charles Precourt.

The press conference rooms in Building 2 sit a short walk from Building 1.

That is where later photographs show him answering questions with a station model on the table.

The campus is a federal research site.

Visitors enter through Space Center Houston next door, not through Building 1.

The work that defined him happened behind the badge line.
