Dynastic History | Qal'a-ye Dokhtar, Firuzabad — The Coins That Put the Fortress Before the Victory

Ardashir I Pāpakān was still a subordinate of the Parthian king when building began on the rock above the Tangāb gorge, on the road running from the Persian Gulf up into the interior of Fars. Qalʿa-ye Doḵtar is a palace inside a fortification: a domed hall about fourteen metres across, carried on squinches over a square room, entered through a deep vaulted iwan, with barrel-vaulted halls terraced down the slope below it.

Ernst Herzfeld sketched the layout in 1926; Aurel Stein documented it more fully in 1936, with readings that later work corrected. The German Archaeological Institute surveyed the site in 1966 and 1972 and excavated it between 1975 and 1977, under a UNESCO restoration programme. What settled the chronology was ordinary: pre-Sasanian coins on the intermediate terrace, placing the building before Ardashir's defeat of the Parthian king Artabanus — numbered IV in current usage and V in older literature — in 224.

The order matters. The dynasty's later account of its own rise reads as destiny; the coins on the terrace record a provincial subordinate fortifying a road he did not yet control. Once he controlled it, the stronghold lost its purpose, and the court moved down to the plain, to a circular city and a larger palace beside a spring.

The site is one of eight components of the Sassanid Archaeological Landscape of Fars Region, inscribed by UNESCO in 2018 and run by Iran's cultural heritage authorities. It is reached on foot, up a steep path from the valley.
