Adventureland|Kennywood's Thunderbolt — Wooden Track Above a Steel-Town River
kevin
The Thunderbolt never gets a scene in Adventureland. It gets something more useful: it is the silhouette on the edge of the frame in almost every wide shot, the reason the park reads as old even when the dialogue is doing something else. Kennywood keeps three wooden coasters — the Jack Rabbit from 1920, the Racer from 1927, the Thunderbolt rebuilt in 1968 around the bones of the 1924 Pippin — and the film uses all of them as scenery rather than spectacle. Nobody in the story ever rides.
Stand at the fence on the park's southern edge and you see why the crew bothered. The Thunderbolt drops into a natural ravine instead of a built structure, so half the ride happens below your feet, and beyond it the ground falls away to the Monongahela. Across the water sits Braddock and the Edgar Thomson Works, blast furnaces still running, the same view that was here in 1987 when the film is set and in 1898 when the park opened as a trolley stop at the end of a streetcar line.
That collision is the film's real subject. A summer job selling stuffed animals, framed against a valley that made steel. Come up to the fence in the evening and listen: the coaster's wooden roar and, underneath it, the low industrial hum from the far bank.
