Racing | Formula 1 | 2021 São Paulo Grand Prix — Hamilton Wins from Tenth at Interlagos

On 14 November 2021, Lewis Hamilton won the inaugural São Paulo Grand Prix at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace, completing a recovery that had begun from the back of the grid in the previous day’s Formula 1 Sprint.

Hamilton had been fastest in Friday qualifying, but his Mercedes rear wing failed the prescribed DRS-opening test: an 85-millimetre gauge passed through the outer section when the flap was open. The stewards disqualified him from qualifying, and Mercedes did not appeal, leaving him twentieth for the Sprint.

He climbed from twentieth to fifth over the Sprint’s 24 laps. A separate five-place Sunday grid penalty for an additional power-unit element then placed him tenth for the Grand Prix, behind polesitter Valtteri Bottas and the Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez.

Hamilton reached third by lap five, passed Pérez after their fight for second, and pursued championship leader Verstappen through two pit-stop cycles. Their first attempt at Turn 4 on lap 48 carried both cars beyond the track edge; the stewards noted the incident but did not investigate it during the race. Hamilton completed the decisive pass with DRS on the approach to Turn 4 on lap 59.

The official classification records Hamilton completing 71 laps in 1 hour 32 minutes 22.851 seconds. Verstappen finished second, 10.496 seconds behind, and Bottas was third at 13.576 seconds. Pérez finished fourth and earned the additional fastest-lap point.

Yuki Tsunoda received a ten-second time penalty for his lap-four collision with Lance Stroll and was classified fifteenth. Neither that sanction nor the weekend’s grid and qualifying penalties changed the podium. Hamilton’s victory reduced his championship deficit to Verstappen from 21 points to 14 with three rounds remaining.

The race used Interlagos’s permanent, counter-clockwise 4.309-kilometre Grand Prix configuration with 15 turns, in service since 1999. The pin marks the circuit complex in São Paulo’s Interlagos district, not an inferred location for an individual pass or incident.
