Racing | Formula 1 | 2017 Mexican Grand Prix — Hamilton Secures His Fourth Championship at Mexico City

At the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez on 29 October 2017, the Mexican Grand Prix settled two different contests: Max Verstappen won the race, while Lewis Hamilton secured the Formula One Drivers’ Championship.

Sebastian Vettel started from pole in the Ferrari, Verstappen alongside him for Red Bull Racing TAG Heuer, and Hamilton third for Mercedes. The three reached the opening complex together. Vettel’s front wing first touched Verstappen’s car and then Hamilton’s right-rear tyre. Hamilton suffered a puncture and diffuser damage; Vettel needed a replacement nose. Both title contenders pitted after lap one and rejoined at the back. The stewards took no further action over the contact.

Verstappen escaped the disruption and controlled all 71 laps of the clockwise, 4.304-kilometre, 17-turn Grand Prix circuit introduced for Formula One’s 2015 return. He finished in 1 hour 36 minutes 26.552 seconds, 19.678 seconds ahead of Valtteri Bottas. Kimi Räikkönen was third at 54.007 seconds. Vettel recovered to fourth, 70.078 seconds behind the winner; Hamilton passed Fernando Alonso late and finished ninth, one lap down.

That result ended the title contest with two rounds remaining. Hamilton left Mexico City on 333 points to Vettel’s 277, a 56-point lead with only 50 still available. It was Hamilton’s fourth World Championship, placing him level at the time with Alain Prost and Vettel and behind only Juan Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher.

The final race classification carried no time penalty or exclusion. Five drivers—Stoffel Vandoorne, Fernando Alonso, Pierre Gasly, Daniel Ricciardo and Brendon Hartley—had received power-unit grid penalties; none altered the podium or championship outcome.
