豪雨に突っ込んだ船の甲板で帆高は足を滑らせ、海へ投げ出されかける。彼をつかんだのが須賀だった。やがて船が着く竹芝客船ターミナルで二人はいったん別れ、手渡された名刺が、行き場のない少年を東京で最初の仕事へ導く。
現地の岸壁には、伊豆諸島と本土を結ぶ船が今も発着する。待合所のガラス扉、乗船口へ続く通路、海風にさらされたデッキ。東京の高層ビルはもう目の前にあるのに、荷物を持った島の人々が改札を抜けるまで、ここはまだ海の交通路の一部だ。映画はその境目に、帆高が「家出した少年」から「東京にいる少年」へ変わる瞬間を置いた。
作中の航海を支えた二代目「さるびあ丸」は2020年に引退し、現在は三代目が島々を結ぶ。船体は変わっても、到着案内が響き、ロープが岸壁へ渡される順序は同じだ。海側からターミナルを振り返ると、帆高にとって東京が街ではなく、まず一つの着岸だったことが見える。
