Bang Soo-won had already taken his spikes off. Two innings was what he threw in those days, and after two innings of an unplanned emergency start he was sitting in the dugout in trainers when somebody told him to go back out.
He pitched seven more. On 5 May 1984 at Gwangju Mudeung Baseball Stadium, Bang Soo-won (방수원) held the Sammi Superstars without a hit for nine innings, walked three, struck out six, and won 7–0. It was the first no-hitter in KBO history, in the league's third season.
Korean accounts and Bang's own recollection agree on how little of it was designed. Haitai had a hole in the rotation and Kim Eung-ryong (김응룡) filled it with him. He walked the leadoff man in the fourth and expected to be taken out. Leading 7–0 in the sixth he walked the leadoff man again, and the manager came a step out of the dugout and then went back in.
Two more numbers finish the story. That win was the only one Bang recorded all season. The shutout was the only one of his career.
He had also started Haitai's first game as a professional club, at Gudeok in Busan on 28 March 1982, and lost it 2–14. The Tigers went on to reach twelve Korean Series and win all twelve. The league's first no-hitter belongs to a man who won one game in the year he threw it.
