People treat a named laboratory as a vanity plate poured after a fortune is made.

This one is a working engineering building paid for while Gordon Moore still sat as Intel's chairman.

Caltech dedicated the Gordon and Betty Moore Laboratory of Engineering on Tuesday, 9 January 1996.

A contemporary Institute press page, preserved by the Wayback Machine, records the donors, the date, the architects Neptune Thomas Davis, the builder Swinerton and Walberg, and the size: about 90,000 square feet of research and teaching space under a red-tile roof.

Moore had taken his chemistry doctorate on this campus in 1954.

He joined the Board of Trustees in 1983 and served as chair from 1993 to 2000.

The laboratory was not his first gift and not his last.

Caltech's 2023 memorial lists undergraduate scholarships, professorships, and discretionary funds alongside this building.

The building is the afterlife of the doctorate, not the place the prediction was typed.
