People treat Cummins as a Columbus diesel house that always printed CMI on the New York Stock Exchange.

The 1947 issuer was an Indiana engine maker whose first public book did not yet live on the Big Board.

Cummins Engine Company was incorporated on 3 February 1919 in Columbus, Indiana. The company's investor FAQ records that Cummins stock was first traded publicly in 1947.

The official company timeline adds that the Cummins ticker first appeared on the New York Stock Exchange in 1964. Market-data services date that NYSE listing to 10 September 1964.

No cash IPO price for the 1964 listing is published in the company's current FAQ.

The mechanism is a two-step public life. Holders could buy Cummins for seventeen years before the tape at 11 Wall Street printed the name.

J. Irwin Miller became president in 1947, the same year as the first public book. The diesel maker later shortened its legal name to Cummins Inc.

The pin is the Broad Street facade of the Exchange, where CMI still prints. Interior trading is not visitable from the sidewalk.
