Esports | Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG | Kouki Kosaka — The 2-0 World Final at Estrel Berlin

On Sunday, August 11, 2019, Kouki Kosaka of Japan and defending champion Chia Ching Wang of Taiwan sat across from one another in the Main TCG Event final at Estrel Berlin. Konami Digital Entertainment B.V.’s publisher-run Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship had brought its preliminary rounds and public finals to the Sonnenallee convention complex over two days.

This was the physical Trading Card Game championship, not the Duel Links mobile division or the age-limited Dragon Duel event staged at the same championship. The Main Event had 28 duelists; its software-free format used printed cards, so the relevant “version” was the World Championship card pool rather than an app or console build.

That pool stopped at cards released by July 12, 2019, excluded cards from DARK NEOSTORM SPECIAL EDITION, and applied a dedicated World Championship Forbidden & Limited list. The special list mattered because qualifiers arrived from regions with different release schedules and ordinary restriction lists, while the Berlin event needed one shared legal environment.

A TCG Match was won by taking two Duels, with a third available only if the players split the first two. Between Duels, each player could exchange cards with a registered fifteen-card Side Deck, allowing adaptation without changing the total size of the registered Main, Extra, and Side Decks.

Kosaka and Wang both registered Salamangreat decks, making the final a mirror match between strategies built around Cyberse monsters and repeated Link Summons. Kosaka’s official list contained 41 cards in the Main Deck, 15 in the Extra Deck, and 15 in the Side Deck; because both finalists used the same central archetype, sequencing and side-deck choices carried unusual weight.

Wang had won the 2018 World Championship, but Kosaka took the opening Duel and then the second. The 2–0 Match ended without a third Duel, making Kosaka the 2019 Main TCG world champion and leaving Wang runner-up.

Konami recorded their result separately from Shuhei Kobayashi’s Duel Links title and Shang-en Sun’s Dragon Duel title. Keeping those divisions distinct preserves what happened at Estrel Berlin: one physical venue hosted three championships, but Kosaka’s was the paper-card Main TCG Event under its own pool, deck rules, and Match score.
