Empress Ki|Hengdian World Studios — Ten Days in a Borrowed Dadu
kevin
AsianWiki's production notes are blunt. From 12 to 23 October 2013 the company left Korea and shot at Hengdian World Studios in Dongyang, Zhejiang.
Hengdian is not a palace. It is a town that learned to rent palaces. The Ming-Qing lot copies the Forbidden City at a scale no Korean open set matches. Tourists walk the same courtyards the extras used. The ticket is a tourist ticket.
The drama needed Yuan scale and Korean faces. For ten days those two things occupied the same gravel. You will not find a plaque that says Empress Ki. You will find a reconstructed meridian gate and a crowd taking the same photograph the crew took while racing the first broadcast on 28 October.
