Descendants of the Sun | Gomati Dunes — The Sahara They Borrowed for Uruk

On the north shore of Lemnos the sand does not stop at the waterline. It climbs inland in pale ridges that the island calls the Sahara of Gomati. A dirt road from Katalakos drops you onto a long, quiet beach. A single bar puts out umbrellas in season. The rest is dune and wind.

Descendants of the Sun used this stretch as the grit of Uruk, the fictional country that had to look hotter and older than a Korean coal valley. The crew moved from Zakynthos to Lemnos in the same autumn of 2015. The dunes gave them distance: no hotel facade, no church, no shipwreck postcard. Just sand that behaved like a desert for a few hundred metres.

Gomati sits about twenty kilometres east of Myrina. The beach is public. The dunes are fragile. Stay on the worn lines if you walk inland. There is no drama plaque at the parking scrape.

Stand where the first ridge hides the road. The Aegean is still there if you turn. If you do not turn, the island becomes a country that does not exist. That is the ordinary fact the series took from Lemnos: a small desert on a green island, enough sand to let a war story breathe.
