Biography|Dario Amodei — Called to 10 Downing Street with the Other Lab Chiefs

On 24 May 2023 Dario Amodei walked into 10 Downing Street.

The official photograph, issued by the Prime Minister's office, shows him with Demis Hassabis of DeepMind and Sam Altman of OpenAI in the same room as Rishi Sunak.

The meeting was not a product launch.

It was a government appointment, on the record, in the Prime Minister's official residence on Whitehall.

Amodei was there as chief executive of Anthropic, the public-benefit company he had co-founded with his sister Daniela and other former OpenAI colleagues in January 2021.

Two years earlier the firm had been a small San Francisco laboratory.

By this afternoon its head was in the same frame as the two other names the British government wanted in the room.

The building is Number 10, a public address used for state business since the eighteenth century.

The pin is the door on Downing Street, not a private house.

The photograph is the government's own file from that evening, later placed on Wikimedia Commons.

It is the first time the Anthropic chief stands on a state doorstep in the official record.
