Racing | Formula 1 | 1965 German Grand Prix — Clark Leads Every Lap to Secure His Second Title at Nürburgring

On 1 August 1965, Jim Clark started the German Grand Prix from pole position in the works Lotus 33-Climax at the Nürburgring.

His qualifying lap of 8 minutes 22.7 seconds put him 3.4 seconds ahead of Jackie Stewart, and the race covered 15 laps of the 22.810-kilometre Nordschleife used before the circuit's later reconstruction.

Clark led every lap. On lap 10 he set the official fastest lap in 8 minutes 24.1 seconds, completing the combination of pole position, victory, fastest lap, and every lap led sometimes described as a grand slam.

He finished in 2 hours 7 minutes 52.4 seconds, 15.9 seconds ahead of Graham Hill's BRM. Dan Gurney's Brabham-Climax was third, 21.4 seconds behind Clark. No penalty changed the first six places in the official classification.

This was Clark's sixth World Championship victory from the six rounds he had entered in 1965. The result made him mathematically secure as World Champion with three races remaining and gave him the second and final Formula 1 Drivers' Championship of his career.

The same result secured Lotus-Climax the 1965 manufacturers' championship. Formula 1's final tables record Clark and Lotus-Climax with 54 points, while Motor Sport's contemporary report called driver, constructor, and engine manufacturer undisputed champions after the Nürburgring win.

Place is essential to the story: this was the original 1927–1966 Nordschleife, not today's Grand Prix circuit. The accompanying diagram shows that historical North Loop, its named sections, and the period start-finish area; it does not claim to be a photograph of the race.
