Chicago Typewriter|Seodaemun Prison History Hall — The Cells the Manuscripts Cost

The red brick does not look like a drama set. It looks like a prison that learned how to keep people.

Seodaemun Prison History Hall stands at 251 Tongil-ro inside Independence Park. The Japanese colonial government opened it in 1908 as Gyeongseong Gamok. Chicago Typewriter sends its 1930s writers here because that is where independence work ended if the page was too clear. VisitSeoul put the museum on the official course next to Ikseon-dong and Book Park.

Eleven original buildings remain, including the cell blocks and the execution yard. You walk the same corridors the series used when Han, Yoo and Jeon paid for the essays they would not stop writing. The museum is closed Mondays and on the two big lunar holidays. English, Japanese and Korean tours run through the halls. Come out into the park and the brick is still behind you. The typewriter in the drama is a fantasy. This yard is not.
