Black & White | Central Park Station — The Exit With Nowhere to Hide

The arrest at Central Park is staged at Exit 1, and anyone who has used the station knows why a director would want it. You do not walk out of Central Park. You are delivered out of it, up a long open escalator, into daylight, in full view of everyone above and behind you.

Richard Rogers designed this one, and it does something most metro stations refuse to do: it opens the box. Instead of a sealed underground hall with a staircase, the concourse is cut open to the sky and covered by a great white canopy on splayed steel legs — the Wing of Office, angled to shed rain and let hot air out. Daylight reaches the platform. Planting runs down the cutting on both sides. You surface through a garden.

For a police drama that is a gift, because it removes every hiding place. A man coming up that escalator cannot turn round, cannot duck aside and cannot be missed. The geometry does the work that a chase sequence would otherwise have to.

Above ground it opens into the park the station is named for, and out onto Sanduo shopping district — one of the busiest corners in the city.

Free to look at; you only pay if you ride. Best at dusk, when the canopy underside is lit and the escalator run turns into a lit shaft coming out of the ground.

Ride up slowly and look back down the escalator the way the camera does. Everything the show says about being watched is built into the architecture, and it was built that way years before anyone thought to film here.
