The Age of Adaline | Vancouver Art Gallery — the archive where a woman who never ages files everyone else's past

Adaline Bowman works in a reading room, restoring old newsreels and cataloguing other people's history while refusing to keep any of her own. The film calls it a San Francisco archive. It is the Vancouver Art Gallery, and the building has more past in it than the character does.
Stand on Hornby Street and look up. This was the provincial courthouse, designed by Francis Rattenbury and finished in 1911, and it still carries itself like one: a granite dome, a colonnade of tall stone columns, and two lions crouched at the top of the steps on the Georgia Street side. Arthur Erickson turned the interior into a gallery in 1983, so the courtrooms became exhibition halls and the rotunda now holds daylight instead of testimony. The bones did not change. The stairs are the same stairs.
That is the quiet joke of using it for Adaline. She is a woman who has outlived every document she handles, filed away inside a building that also had one life and then another, and kept the same face through both.
Go in through the Hornby entrance and take the stairs rather than the elevator. Halfway up you get the view the camera liked: the stone curving away, the light coming down flat and grey through the dome, and the sound of the street cutting out entirely. It is the closest the city gets to feeling like a place where time has been asked to wait.
