Racing | Formula 1 | 1961 Monaco Grand Prix — Moss Holds Off Ferrari in Rob Walker's Lotus

On 14 May 1961, Stirling Moss started the XIX Grand Prix de Monaco from pole in Rob Walker's year-old Lotus 18-Climax, facing the works Ferrari 156s of Richie Ginther, Phil Hill, and Wolfgang von Trips on the harbour streets of Monte Carlo.

The official Formula 1 grid records Moss's pole time as 1 minute 39.1 seconds, two-tenths faster than Ginther, while the contemporary Motor Sport report identifies the car as the Walker Lotus and notes that its cockpit side panels had been removed for the warm, 100-lap race.

Ginther led the field away, but Moss closed the early gap and passed the Ferrari on lap 14, after which the older Lotus's agility through Monaco's corners had to offset the greater power of the new Ferrari engine.

By half distance, Moss's lead had fallen from ten seconds to seven as Ginther forced the Ferrari pace, and Motor Sport recorded the margin at only five seconds by lap 58.

Ginther set a 1-minute 36.3-second lap on lap 84, and Moss answered with the identical fastest time one lap later; Formula 1's archive lists both drivers jointly at the top of the fastest-lap table.

Moss completed all 100 laps in 2 hours 45 minutes 50.1 seconds and crossed the line 3.6 seconds before Ginther, with Phil Hill third and von Trips classified fourth after completing 98 laps; the official result lists no post-race time penalty or disqualification affecting that order.

The victory was achieved on Monaco's 3.145-kilometre configuration used from 1955 through 1962, whose start and finish lay on the harbour front before being moved toward Sainte Dévote in 1963, so the pin marks the Circuit de Monaco at Port Hercule rather than a speculative corner-specific location.

The Automobile Club de Monaco also records 14 May 1961 as the debut of motorway-style safety rails around the circuit, replacing the haystacks previously used to protect drivers, spectators, and marshals.
