Biography|Olof Kjellstrom — The Brickworks North of Hoje a That Took Him at Eighteen

People date Skanska from the 1887 spin-off in Malmö.

Olof Kjellström's first pay packet came six years earlier, from the parent cement company.

In 1881 Skånska Cement AB posted the eighteen-year-old to its brickworks north of Höje å in Lomma.

The yard had been Frans Henrik Kockum's.

Kockum had bought Lomma gård in the 1850s and put a large brickworks and a harbour at the river mouth.

The cement company bought the works in 1871, the year the firm itself was founded.

Sweden's first Portland cement plant stood just west of the kilns and ran until 1905.

He stayed through 1883.

The works were already among the largest brick plants in Skåne.

A ring kiln had been firing here since 1873, the second of its type in the country.

Steam power had been on the site since 1862.

By 1890 the yard was turning out on the order of ten million bricks a year.

Brickmaking ended in 1958.

The sheds were pulled down around 1956.

What a visitor finds now is the river mouth and Lomma harbour.

A chimney footing with a plaque marks the vanished cement plant.

The clay pits and drying floors are gone.

From here he moved into the cement foundry in Malmö, then up to the Stockholm branch.
