Biography|Larry Fink — The Wall Street Listing That Priced BlackRock at Fourteen Dollars
kevin
On 1 October 1999 BlackRock sold stock on the New York Stock Exchange at 14 dollars a share.
The firm was then the asset-management arm of PNC Bank Corp.
American Banker reported the deal the following Monday: nine million shares, 126 million dollars raised, a 14 percent stake, and a firm valued near 900 million dollars.
Merrill Lynch led the underwriting.
BlackRock's own timeline records the same date and the same 14-dollar print, and notes that assets under management finished that year at 165 billion dollars.
This is not the founding.
The founding was a five-million-dollar Blackstone loan and a room at 345 Park Avenue in 1988, already told on this map as a finance-history pin.
By 1995 PNC had bought the firm.
The listing made a slice of it public and left Fink as chief executive of a company the tape could now price every day.
The floor at 11 Wall Street is the place that print became official.
Eleven years after the First Boston loss, the man who had been a pariah on a mortgage desk was running a listed manager.
The share price sat at the low end of the expected range.
Financial stocks were under pressure that autumn.
The listing still held.
From this facade the later deals look like scale: Merrill Lynch Investment Managers in 2006, then Barclays Global Investors, including iShares, announced on 11 June 2009 at 13.5 billion dollars.
On the day itself the story was smaller.
A Pittsburgh bank floated a bond shop, and a CEO from Van Nuys watched the first tick.
