30 Minutes or Less|124 South James Street, Ludington — the hundred-year-old bank

The robbery is not filmed in Grand Rapids. For that, the production drove two hours northwest to Ludington, a Lake Michigan port town of eight thousand people, and used the empty bank at 124 South James Street. The Michigan Film Office describes it as a century-old banking hall, vacant at the time of filming and standing on a downtown block then in the middle of its own revival.

It was the right choice. A working branch would have looked like a branch; this one still had the proportions banks were given when they wanted to be believed — high ceiling, stone face, doors heavier than they need to be. Nick walks in wearing a vest and a mask, and the room does half the acting.

The film's premise drew criticism at release for its resemblance to a real 2003 Pennsylvania crime, and that shadow sits oddly against a comedy. Worth knowing before you stand here.

South James Street is walkable in ten minutes end to end, and it ends at the water. Look at the bank's façade, then keep going west until the street runs out at Lake Michigan and the car ferry dock. The town has better things to show you than the robbery.
